The Regional Conference of Genetic Improvement Role in Food Security for Africa



It is a specialized conference held under the auspice of His Excellency / Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Rangelands , Dr. Faisal Hassan Ibrahim in Libda Hall , Corinthia Hotel in Khartoum with main aim of improving animal productivity through tackling animal health (10%), nutrition (30%) and genetic improvement (60%). This is in the period from March 29th to 30th 2014. 

Objectives:
The conference will be held under the following objectives:
-        To shed lights on the importance of genetic improvement for better production.
-        To single out and determine the problems and obstacles facing genetic improvement initiatives.
-        To lay out policies supporting genetic improvement with clear cut profiles and engagement of community as whole.
-        To invite the scientists, researchers and experts operating in the field of genetic improvement from countries in the regions and other outstanding ones in the field of animal breeding and genetic improvement to reflect their experience.
-        To incorporate the regional experiences in genetic improvement effect on food security.   
 


The Conference Sessions:
The conference sessions will discuss a number of papers from variable sources that are as follows:
-        Sudan experience and prospects of genetic improvement.
-        France experience.
-        Tanzania experience.
-        Kenya experience.
-        Australian experience
-        Brazil experience
-        South Africa experience
-        Sudanese local Breeders experience
In addition to the above mentioned papers , the conference will include the following programs:
-        Small exhibition of institutions and companies operating in the field of animal production.
-        Visits to institutes and farms operating in animal production and genetic improvement.
-        Documentary video shows.

The Expected Output:
It is expected to reach the following outputs:
1)     Maintenance of Sudanese genetic resources through application of SMP technologies and sexed semen in improving the genetic potentialities of sheep in the national herd.
2)     The breeding and genetic improvement records will be available to investors in the field of animal production.
3)     Development of artificial insemination together with embryo transfer technologies.
4)     Revelation and presentation of remarkable researches in animal breeding.
5)     Establishing supportive data base for local and hybrid breeds.
6)     Development of training, capacity building and extension services in animal breeding.
